The Christ figure in
Kristineberg
Introduction
Time after time,
events occur that capture our attention in a special way. In the
world of nature, we can see phenomena that fill us with wonder. The
alert observer encounters wondrous things every day. What we will
describe below happened a few years ago in the northern part of our
country and is probably one of the more peculiar.
The
community of Kristineberg
The mining community of Kristineberg
has grown up like a mushroom from the ground. It is located 70 km
from the town of Lycksele in Västerbotten. Previously, there was
only one farm there, but then one day it was discovered that there
was precious iron, copper and gold ore under the bog and the
mountain. In a record short time, a community grew up with over 1,000
homes, schools, hospitals, post office, telegraph, Folkets Hus and
other meeting places. The desolate area was transformed into a
community with seething life and movement. The world's longest cable
car, 96 km long, was built in one year and five days. It transports
ore barrels from Kristineberg past the "gold city" Boliden
down to the Rönnskär smelter in 10 hours. With an interval
of 86 seconds between each barrel, more than 1,000 tons of ore are
transported from the mine in Kristineberg to Rönnskär every
day.
A Christ figure 107 m below the surface
This
mining community has become the subject of great attention not only
because such great wealth in the form of precious minerals is hidden
under this inhospitable and rugged surface, but also because of a
strange incident that occurred in one of the mine shafts on November
29, 1946. When the miners, after an explosion, shone their
searchlights on the rock face, they were met by a radiant Christ
figure. It was as if a curtain had been drawn aside. Something
strange had been uncovered down there, 107 m below the surface of the
earth.

An old prophecy
This event
gave new relevance to an old prophecy, which had been preserved
orally, but which is now recorded at the county museum in Umeå.
The following prophecy tells of what will happen in the coming
days:
"In the last days of the world many false prophets
will arise, many of whom will predict the time of the final judgment.
If you hear such people speak, do not believe what they say, for only
God knows about that day. The proof that we are approaching the end
is the teaching of men, which is spreading throughout the earth. The
nations will also become selfish and trust in themselves.
Christianity will decline and godliness will disappear. People will
think that no God created the earth. Some will believe that men
themselves have brought about the miracle. The people of the future
will make great inventions, yes, so great that they will believe that
not even God has made such miracles. Human inventiveness will reshape
the people that God created, but those people will lack souls. People
will travel in the sky on kite-like objects. There will be kite-like,
hissing objects in the sky, on the earth and under the earth. At that
time people will rejoice and claim to be the masters of the universe.
But still they are not satisfied. The next stage will be the attempt
to overcome death. No one will have to die but will have eternal
life. All this people will see, but they no longer have the eyes of
wisdom to see with. They will not want to repent of their sins. The
plagues of tribulation will overtake all the countries and peoples of
the earth, and in all tongues lamentations will be heard.
But
in the North there is a country with a tall people, and the peoples
of the North will be spared for the most part from the tribulations
that have already gone out over the earth. For God himself has
prepared a dwelling for his only-begotten Son in one of the
shimmering mountains of the North. The mountain and the land will
long be overshadowed by the hand of the Lord. Where the mountain and
the land are, no one knows yet, but it will be revealed in the last
days of the world. But before that time comes, the people of the
North have deviated from God's appointed ways. God will still have
mercy on the people of the North, because they are generous of
themselves. But even that people will increase in sin. Then God will
show people the dwelling place of his only-begotten Son in the
shining mountain, the dwelling place that he himself prepared.
There
will come a time when there will be great astonishment before the
image of Christ. But soon they will forget everything, and
godlessness will prevail among the people. They will cry out that
there is no other god than the god of knowledge. The shining mountain
will then appear again and be talked about among people, because
God's protective hand still rests on the people who live there. This
time the image of Christ will appear on top of the mountain, so that
everyone can see it. Again people will see and be amazed at the great
wonder. God will also spare the people of the North for a time from
the tribulations of time, as long as the image of God appears, and
its dwelling place is not destroyed by human hands.
However,
godlessness increases. The people's unbelief becomes greater and
greater. The mountain with the image of God is crushed. God then
takes his protective hand from the people of the North. The
tribulations that the noble people have been spared from for so long
will come upon them. Seven times and seven times worse than the
plagues that have afflicted other countries and peoples of the
earth." - So much for this prophecy.
When the figure
of Christ was revealed
It was thus at the end of November 1946
in the Kristineberg mine, when the blasting was in progress, that a
figure of Christ appeared. It consisted of the silvery so-called
seresite quartzite, and reproduced clear features of Christ, such as
we are used to seeing him depicted. The figure differed in a strange
way from the surrounding dark chlorite quartzite. Everyone who saw
the approximately 3 m high figure was visibly moved. An eyewitness, a
priest, tells what an overwhelming impression it made, seen from a
room in the mountain at a distance of about 20 m in the light of two
strong searchlights. It was one of the unforgettable moments of his
life, when he had the opportunity to see this vision.
The workers
reported the incident to the mine management, who after an
investigation gave the order for the blasting to continue and thus
the image to be destroyed. But then the strange thing happened, that
none of the miners obeyed the order, they refused firmly. Upon later
investigation it turned out that a great accident would have occurred
if the order had been carried out, since the very supporting massif
in the mine would then have been blasted away and an inevitable
catastrophe had occurred. One of the workers, an atheist in his
outlook on life, was so moved by the silent sermon he encountered
there in the form of the figure of Christ, that he was converted to
God and is today a professing Christian.
An enormous interest
among people from different parts of our country caused a migration
to the mine. People wanted to see the strange image. Both the
provincial newspapers and the Stockholm press wrote about the miracle
in Kristineberg and the interest grew every day. To put an end to the
incredible influx of people to the mine, the mine management found it
necessary to have the mine shaft filled up and now the image of
Christ is hidden underground again. For how long? Will the old
prediction come true and the image of Christ become visible again? It
has been preserved photographically before the shaft was filled
up.
Commissioner N.O. Nolander from Björksele
says:
"If we take into account the time calculations of
modern people, this rock formation would have been formed in the
interior of the earth by the hand of the Creator thousands of years
before the Savior became human. What could the meaning be other than
the omniscience's foresight about stones that speak. The sharp crowns
of the machine drills, which are pressed several meters into the rock
walls, or the violent dynamite charges, would not reach this image,
but here the rock splits and reveals a divine testimony."
To
this a Jew who believes in Christ adds:
"One thing is
certain: It is not a coincidence that an image, which happened to
resemble a figure of Christ, appeared on the rock face, but there is
a deeper meaning in this. The stones cry out and want to direct our
gaze to Him, our Savior, of whom the long, golden chain of divine
promises, models and the entire Levitical service with the many
thousands of sacrificial animals together with all the high priests
bear witness that in the consummation of time a redeemer would come,
who in his person is both the high priest and the victim, to die for
us. By opening our hearts to Him through faith, we receive the gift
of salvation and thus eternal life. You who read these lines: Think
about the salvation of your soul, believe that God has so loved the
world that He gave His only begotten Son also for you for redemption
from all sin. And let the figure of Christ in Kristineberg become
what it has already become for many others: a divine wake-up call in
these end times to decide for or against Christ and a pressing call
to choose the right and allow the Spirit of God to transform your
life and lead you from darkness to Light, from disobedience to God to
a Christ-like life in self-giving love and to the dominion of the
Spirit over flesh and world! So be it, in Jesus' name, amen! "
